Branch # 18 Comox Valley – Funtime Fiddlers

The Comox Valley Funtime Fiddlers Branch #18 is located in the Comox Valley, on central Vancouver Island and includes the communities of Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Merville and Black Creek and has a population of 62,326. In addition to this, the club has members who come from as far south as Parksville and as far north as Campbell River.

The Funtime Fiddlers Branch #18 was started in the fall of 2007 and ratified at the BCOTFA annual general meeting in Abbotsford in May of that each year. We have members ranging in age from 5 to 96 and are active at many different locales around the area playing for dances, shows, private parties and fundraisers.

One of our main goals is to promote and encourage old time fiddling among young people. From the proceeds of our dances, we present young people with bursaries for camps, workshops and contests.

If you are traveling in our area please contact us and join us if we are playing anywhere!

VALENTINE FIDDLE CONTRA DANCE at the MERVILLE HALL

“O my Luve is like a red, red rose” cried Poet Robbie Burns with a mouth full of haggis at the haggisly romantic Robbie Burns Contra dance last January in the Big Yellow Merville hall.  Imagine how The Bard will gush as the Funtime Fiddlers ramp up the romance for the Valentine’s Day Contra dance at the hall on Saturday, February 17th, 2018.  Fiddle music, hearts and flowers will fill the hall along with the coruscating commands from dance caller, June Cannon, who will blow kisses and directions to keep the dancers organized and having fun.

There is even a Contra dance workshop right before the dance.  From 7:00 to 7:29, June will introduce the coy dancers to new moves and teach the basics.  Single dancers and families are very welcome.  Singles can pair up with anyone during the Contras and our Contra sets last about 15 to 20 minutes.

In between the called Contra dances, we’ll play waltzes and reels; jigs and swing tunes, as well as line up some talented soloists for a little Valentine variety.  Spot dance prizes abound so look sharp and dance up a storm.  Or, if you wish, you can sit at a table with refreshments and spoon with your sweetie.

So Saturday, February 17th, 2018, pop into the Big Yellow Merville Dance Hall, right on the Old Island Highway, between Campbell River and Courtenay.

Doors open at 7:00, dance starts at 7:30pm.

Cost is $10.00/adults, $5.00/youth (6 and under free) and you can come as a family for $22.00.

Free workshop starts at 7:00.
