Merritt

 Branch # 8 Merritt

Merritt has a population of 7,000 people, located on highway 5 it is 118 km from Hope and 108 km form Peachland in the Okanagan Valley.  The Nicola valley is marked by the Nicola River and the town of Merritt lies at the confluence of the Nicola and Coldwater rivers.  The Town of Merritt was established in 1906.  The area is a center for some of the best cattle ranching in BC.  In 1945 the last of the coal mines in this area closed down.  It provided a base for later copper mining in the area and remains a lumbering center.

Tentative Dates

Fiddlers Campout – May 14 – 20,  2024 at Elks Harmon Lake Campground

Harmon Lake is 17.5 kms. on Hwy 5A heading to Kelowna from Merritt.  Turn right on Kane Valley Rd. (cross country ski trails) and travel 9 kms. south. The road is windy but will hopefully be in good shape.  Keep on this road past the Forestry campsite,  just past the end of Harmon Lake.  Look for the Elks Campground sign on your left.   It is a dirt road, follow it over the cattleguard and the sign will direct you into the campground through the gate.   This is a dry campsite but there are outdoor toilets, also a building with a pot belly stove if the weather is chilly. It is located right by the lake so bring your boats for fishing.  The lake is stocked with rainbow trout.

The enclosed hall is powered with a generator for lights and music.

Put on your competitive hat as we play horseshoes and hold crib tournaments throughout the week.  On Saturday there will be a pot luck dinner if you wish to join in, with an auction on Sunday afternoon.  Money raised from the auction is used to help  with music lessons and the purchase of an instrument if someone needs assistance.  You are welcome to bring  an item to donate for the auction and participate in the fun.

We invite all musicians to join in the week long jam sessions. Usually someone local brings the sound system,  so bring your instruments, amplifiers, microphones and voices.

The cost is $10.00 per day and you can stay the week or camp for a night.  You can come for a day trip if you wish. We usually have a big crowd and they come from all over so come early and pick your site.   If you have any questions you can e-mail otfbr8@gmail.com.  Hope to see you there.
