Branch # 9 Kootenay

Castlegar has a population of just over 7,000 people. The community is located on the banks of the Columbia River. The bench land is at the junction of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers.

The flatlands on the Columbia’s east bank and between the two rivers was first occupied by the Doukhobors in 1908. The early communes involved planting of orchards, gardens, sawmills and small community industries. The original settlement lies in and near the current airport and some evidence of these early settlers is still present.

The Kootenay Fiddlers, BCOTF Chapter #9, are pleased to announce our 2018 Fiddle Workshop!  The 17th Annual “Fiddle Camp” will take place at Selkirk College in Castlegar BC. from July 9th – 13th. Online Registration will be available soon, along with instructor, schedule and cost information. Stay tuned!

Players of all skill levels are always welcome, from those who have never held a fiddle before to advanced players with many years of experience.  In the past we have had a wide range of age groups, and usually keep age groups and skill levels together.

There are classes for fiddle, guitar and piano, plus a variety of workshops on related topics such as stepdancing, harmony, vocals, and What To Play When You Don’t Know The Tune.  In the evenings there will be events such as a family-friendly Old Time Dance, jam sessions, a Students’ Concert and an Instructors’ Concert.

The music is based upon East Coast Old Time Fiddling.  Our primary instructor, Gordon Stobbe, is a Master Fiddler who hails from the East Coast and instructs at workshops around the country.  Several other first-rate instructors will join Gord for this year’s Fiddle Workshop.

As for accommodation, there will be dorm rooms available through the college, several local camp grounds and many hotels. Selkirk College provides cafeteria services, and it’s an easy five-minute drive to restaurants in downtown Castlegar.

Classes are designed for learning and fun. Please feel free to bring a recording device to keep track of all the tunes you will hear.
